if you experienced playing Mega Man 3 when you were 12 years old, it’s like you did live through it in some weird way, like, you played that game, you were Mega Man for a while. I just wanted to explore that. I don’t really know what I would say about that, were I to give a lecture on the topic, so I think my lecture on the topic is being explored in Scott Pilgrim.

I really haven’t even looked at the book yet. I flipped through it, but they’re like invisible pages to me. I’ve done the work over so many years that I’m so used to seeing them, and now it’s almost like a book of blank pages. I can’t absorb it the same way someone else can.

This is a very precise articulation of a weird and real thing. Sometimes looking at old work I can’t even comprehend it. I “know” the pages so well that they’re completely meaningless to me. It takes real effort to actually read one of my old books — generally I read it once, as soon as I get the printed copy (it isn’t “real” until it’s in print) and then it stops having any meaning and I kind of stop caring about it. Copies pile up around me and I am glad other people can comprehend them but they are not for me. I kind of wonder how much I’ll look at Scott Pilgrim at all after this summer is over. Maybe it’ll be a few years before I pick up one of those books again.

Scott Pilgrim? I’ve personally rarely encountered a book as insipid, proffering up a familiarity with the rhythms of video games and nerd media as if it was some sort of justifiable postmodern stance and not merely an apologia for a lifetime spent skirting illiteracy. (Besides the fact that its retrograde attitude towards women makes Identity Crisis seem like a Betty Friedan tract.)

Kind of hilarious: at the aint it cool news version of this story, there’s a huge battle in the comments about how Wallace Wells is supposed to be ASIAN (Japanese?) and they are VERY disappointed in Edgar Wright’s insensitivity.

It’s been more than a week since my last post, and I have little more to show than some more pencil/ink stuff. Here is a panel from the book that I particularly liked.

Scott Pilgrim just turned 24, and things couldn’t possibly be better! This means things are about to get infinitely worse. Suddenly, TWO of Ramona’s evil ex-boyfriends are in town, and they’re playing dirty. His band is in turmoil, and his own exes aren’t making things any easier. And what’s up with Ramona, anyway? She’s been acting kinda weird ever since they moved in together. It’s the SECOND LAST VOLUME of SCOTT PILGRIM: Scott’s precious little life is coming back around to bite him in the butt, and it may not be pretty!

INTERNET: Gravity Hook is a nice little time-waster. It’s a Flash game with retro graphics and music where you are a little robo-blob using a grappling hook to climb upwards. The catch is that you can only grab on to floating space mines, and when you grab them they arm themselves, and when you get too close, they explode. That’s pretty much the whole thing in a nutshell.

If you haven’t, you should get Google Chrome for the finest web browsing experience you’ve yet seen. Unless you’re on a Mac. (But if you’re on a Mac, you’re probably gloating about something or other anyway, so give us this brief window of smug satisfaction.)

I can’t officially condone this, but it certainly seems pretty cool.
