A Conversation With Bryan Lee O’Malley – SPX 2008

June 27, 2010 | 9:28 pm, by radiomaru

if you experienced playing Mega Man 3 when you were 12 years old, it’s like you did live through it in some weird way, like, you played that game, you were Mega Man for a while. I just wanted to explore that. I don’t really know what I would say about that, were I to give a lecture on the topic, so I think my lecture on the topic is being explored in Scott Pilgrim.

Read the whole thing at Comics Comics.

    Great interview!

One thing I would like to do, after vol.6 is out, is go back and try to interpret the various ex battles in terms of what they meant to Scott’s relationship with Ramona, like what character traits or neuroses were being explored in each one. I’ve heard from other readers that they were able to read the series in that way, but frankly, the symbolism is a bit obscure to me. I always just read the story as a fun ongoing story, with great character development throughout of course, but I have never been able to approach it on a deeper structural level, so there seemed to be some complexity which added to the mystery and enjoyment, but which I felt maybe I was missing out on. Maybe I need the Cliff’s notes?

Or maybe that would be a mistake, and I should just continue to enjoy it on the level that I’m at now?

Great advice Bryan! Instead of playing video games I’ll write and draw comics and put them on line!

Cool interview. Really insightful. I always love reading about how creators came to be, etc.
