The Los Angeles Times has announced the finalists for its 2009 Book Prizes: for the first time, graphic novels will be in competition for an LA Times Book Prize of their own.

Nominees in the new Graphic Novel category, by Gilbert Hernandez, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Taiyo Matsumoto, David Mazzucchelli and Joe Sacco, are a diverse selection of works that include the Gen-Y favorite Scott Pilgrim, a new take on the classic Love & Rockets series, and an illustrated journalistic account of the Gaza strip.

    Wow, congratulations!! If they had a cover category, SP would win it hands down :D I wonder how they compare these comics with one another.. at least asterios polyp and scott pilgrim are pretty far apart in style and theme.

    Good job on the new blog too, i’ve enjoyed the frequent posts.

    This is great news, but if David Mazzucchelli is nominated, it’s probably for Asterios Polyp, I really do not envy the judges who have to make that choice…
