MEANWHILE…

February 5, 2010 | 3:43 pm, by radiomaru

Transformers #19 at the drug store when I was 7 years old -> Marvel -> X-Men -> X-Force -> Image -> Gen 13 -> high school -> ugh, comics -> (but i was still drawing them, secretly, all by myself) -> staring at Bone #19 on the shelf for 3 weeks and eventually buying it because I felt bad about handling it so many times -> Bone, Cerebus, Replacement God-> Sailor Moon on YTV -> anime -> Ranma 1/2 -> Ranma 1/2 manga -> like every other manga I could find in the late 90s -> “I Feel Sick” -> Seth’s “It’s A Good Life If You Don’t Weaken”, because it was set in Southwestern Ontario -> Hicksville -> Bendis & stuff -> Paul Pope’s “Heavy Liquid” -> tracking down every other Paul Pope book that ever existed -> Jamie Hewlett “Tank Girl” reprints that came out around the same time -> The Invisibles! -> Grant Morrison -> Paradise Kiss -> manga boom -> more manga -> manga in French that I couldn’t get in English yet, like “Nana” -> older manga -> Tezuka manga -> everything

EDIT: I forgot about some stuff, like the Invisibles and Grant Morrison (his X-Men run and “The Filth” in the early aughts also had a huge impact), so I stuck them in the timeline in boldface

Hicksville is being republished soon with a new comic introduction by Dylan, as well as retooled art and lettering. You possibly already knew that already

Yeah, unfortunately, that’s good advice on Cerebus. The second volume is pretty good and has most of the interesting political stuff and humor, but it would probably hook you for a few more volumes, which would get you into some of the more interesting character stuff, but then the whole series falls off a major cliff half-way through, wrecking it completely. Fans like me still stuck it out to the end and got some enjoyment out of it, but at a huge price in time and emotional investment squandered. So if you can avoid the whole thing, then steer clear. Dave Sim is still an important figure in the history of the last few decades of comics, but better to admire his influence from a distance than to deal with his insane psycho behavior up close.

Aw man, I remember “I Feel Sick!” And I was twelve when I read it, too, so I thought that stuff was so crazy and revolutionary. Man, it’s Jhonen Vasquez’s fault I’m a comic artist now instead of an astrophysicist.
